Velcro Fasteners: Technical data - Adhesive Guide

INTRODUCTION
Before choosing an adhesive Velcro tape, we recommended that you read this information carefully.
The adhesives described in this manual are standard ones produced by Velcro Europe S.A.

TERMINOLOGY
PS = pressure sensitive adhesives, self-adhesive
PC = pre-coating
TACK = instant bond

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS:

PREPARATION OF VELCRO TAPES
Pointed corners of Velcro Hook or Loop tape are sometimes detrimental to a good bond. We recommended nipping or rounding each corner of the Velcro tape to eliminate this vulnerable area.

YOUR PLANT CONDITIONS
Your work area must be cleaned and free from dirt and dust in the air. It is also essential to have a well ventilated area when using solvent activated adhesives. Ideal room temperatures should be 18o to 20o C, and relative humidity 40% to 60%, (the lower the humidity, the better the bond).
Another important factor is to have the tape at room temperature. If the adhesive is applied below the recommended application temperatures, it loses TACK. Once the adhesive or self-adhesive tape is applied press it firmly into contact with the substrate to smooth tape and to avoid air bubbles.

SURFACE PREPARATION
It is mandatory that all surfaces be thoroughly cleaned and dry. All cleaning agents should be tested prior to use, to ensure cleaning agent will have no adverse effect on the substrate.

POROUS SUBSTRATE
This type of surface is one that requires a primer or sealer to provide a suitable bonding area. This could consist of a coating or a liquid adhesive. Allow to dry prior to final adhesive procedure.

SMOOTH SURFACES
Superior bonding can be achieved by cleaning or roughing up the surface.

TYPES OF ADHESIVE SYSTEMS:
Most Velcro tapes have an elastometric binder coat which firmly locks hooks and loops in the ground weave and prevents ravelling of tapes when cut. Due to this coating, some commercial adhesives will not readily adhere to the back of this tape.
Note: Our extruded products do not have binder coating.

PRESSURE SENSITIVE PRE-COATS
Pressure sensitive pre-coats are popular because of the ease application. Simply remove the release medium and press Velcro tape in place. Its durability will be subject to application conditions.

SOLVENT, HEAT AND ULTRA-SONIC ACTIVATED ADHESIVE PRE-COATS
The pre-coated adhesive backings applied during the factory process provide the strongest and most permanent adhesive bond to the tape itself. They can be made ready for instant bonding directly on the substrate by many easy methods of application such as solvents, heat, ultra-sonics, etc.

METHODS OF ADHESIVE APPLICATIONS:
  1. Solvent Activated Pre-Coats
    Apply the recommended solvent activator freely to the back of the pre-coated Velcro tape with a brush or sponge applicator and allow the adhesive to become TACKY. Proper tackiness occurs when the adhesive clings to a finger placed on it. When TACKY, position the tape on a cleaned substrate using finger pressure, a small roller or any other object to smooth tape and let dry. Ultimate bond strength is achieved in 24 hours. The drying process can be accelerated by using a 60°C heat source.
  2. Heat Activated Pre-Coats
    The heat activated pre-coats require an average temperature application of 160°C.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Before using one of our adhesives, you should determine the suitability of the product for its intended use by testing the product prior to the final application.
When positioning the tape, it is important to use finger pressure or any suitable object to smooth tape, specially in the corners and edges so that the pre-coating is distributed correctly.

RESPONSIBILITY
Seller's and manufacturer's only obligation shall be to replace the quantity of product proven to be defective. Neither seller nor manufacturer shall be liable for any injury, loss or damage, direct or consequential, arising out of the use of or the inability to use this product.
